Austin is one of the best portrait cities in Texas — if you know where to point the camera and when. These are the spots I come back to again and again, with the timing and feel of each so you can pick what fits your photos.
Mount Bonnell — the classic skyline
For elevated views over Lake Austin and the hills, nothing beats Mount Bonnell. Go right before sunset for warm backlight and that signature layered-hills background. It gets busy on weekends, so a weekday golden hour gives us room to work.
Zilker & Barton Springs — open green light
Zilker's open lawns and tree lines are perfect for soft, natural portraits and family sessions. Early morning is calm and the light is clean; late afternoon gives you golden backlight through the trees. Great for relaxed, lifestyle-feeling photos.
Mueller Lake Park — modern & tidy
On the east side, Mueller gives you a clean, contemporary backdrop — the lake, the bridge, modern architecture and wide paths. It's one of my go-tos for branding and headshots that need a fresh, current look without going downtown.
East Austin murals — color & personality
If your brand or personality has color, the East Austin / East 6th mural walls are unbeatable. Bold backgrounds make portraits pop and feel distinctly Austin. The trick is matching your wardrobe to the wall so you stand out instead of blending in — something we plan ahead.
Downtown & Congress Avenue — urban editorial
For a polished, editorial city look, downtown alleys, the Congress Avenue bridge area and glass-and-steel backdrops deliver. Early Sunday mornings are quietest. This is the move for founders and creatives who want an ambitious, "city" energy in their branding.
McKinney Falls State Park — nature without leaving town
Just south of the city, McKinney Falls offers limestone, water and woods — a natural, grounded backdrop that feels far from downtown but is a short drive. Beautiful for families and earthy lifestyle portraits. (A state-park entry fee applies.)
Laguna Gloria & the Contemporary — sculpture-garden elegance
For something more refined, the grounds at Laguna Gloria pair gardens, sculpture and lake views. It reads upscale and timeless — lovely for editorial portraits and milestone sessions.
A note on timing & the Austin sun
Austin light is strong. For outdoor portraits I almost always shoot the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset ("golden hour") — the light is soft, warm and flattering, and you're not squinting into harsh midday sun. In summer that golden window is early; in winter it's a comfortable late afternoon. When you tell me your date, I'll tell you the exact time we should meet.
Not sure which location fits your vibe? That's part of what the pre-session planning call is for — we match the spot to your goal, your wardrobe and the season.
